During the annual campus shutdown, movers hauled boxes of books and laboratory equipment into the department's new facilities, located in the former South Stadium building of Memorial Stadium.

The three-story building had been home to Athletic Department offices since it was built in 1972. Athletic offices relocated to the new Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex at the stadium's north end.

During the renovations, Computer Science and Engineering faculty and staff occupied offices in the Miller and Paine building in downtown Lincoln, and Avery Hall, Ferguson Hall and the 501 Building on campus.

The Schorr Center offices will consolidate Computer Science and Engineering programs and space into two locations, Avery Hall and the Schorr Center, and provide unique, modern facilities with ample laboratory space, said Richard Sincovec, chair of the department.

"This is a modern building with great research facilities," Sincovec said. "It will support a number of research and educational activities. It provides key lab space for students, including senior design projects and cluster computing. It also designates a superb computer room for the Research Computing Facility, providing space for significant computational resources to support cyberinfrastructure projects across the campus and beyond."

New sensor networking and networking labs have been designed, Sincovec added, as sensor networks and networking in general play a significant role in multiple disciplines and for the UNL campus community.

The Schorr Center will also be home for the supercomputers PrairieFire and Red.

The Computer Science and Engineering department will celebrate its 40th year in April.
