Theatrix opens spring season with first New Artists Festival

Theatrix opens the spring semester showcasing young playwrights in the New Artists Festival, Feb. 21-24 in the Lab Theatre, third floor of the Temple Building. Theatrix is the student theatre organization in UNL's Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film.

The inaugural New Artists Festival features five, 10-minute plays and two one acts. Each production is written and directed by UNL students. Combined, the plays feature more than 30 different student actors.

The one-act plays include "Malus" and "Sweet Dreams."

"Malus" is a dark look at mysterious Shakespearean characters caught in Perdition. The performance features Alex Jeffery, Sean Kloc and Eric Smith.

"Sweet Dreams" is a children's tale that follows Jo (Sarah Carlson) as she travels inside her dreams and nightmares, finding strength through friends and families to conquer personal fears. The play was commissioned by UNL's Arts are Basic program.

The 10-minute plays are presented at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 and 23, and at 10:30 p.m. Feb. 22. The one-act productions begin at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 and 24, and at 10:30 pm. Feb. 23.

Individual show tickets are $6 via credit card (some user fees may be added) at www.unltheatretickets.com. New Artists Festival passes (good for one evening each of 10-minute plays and one acts) are $10 for adults, $7 for students with a valid school ID. The passes are available at www.unl.edu/theatrix.
