'Unvarnished Truth' opens April 17

University Theatre closes the 2007-2008 season with "The Unvarnished Truth," a dark comedy. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. April 17-19 and April 23-26 in the Temple Building's Howell Theatre.

"The Unvarnished Truth," by Royce Ryton, features a procession of screwball characters, beginning with Tom Bryce (played by Justin Gamerl) and his wife Annabel (Andrea Beckwith). During an argument over who loves the other more, Annabel is killed.

Tom's police buddy - a literary agent and grim police inspector played by Robie Hayek - enters the picture and proceeds to complicate the situation.

Other women - including Tom's mother-in-law, his excitable nurse and a crazed landlady - also turn up dead in the production. The problem becomes what to do with the bodies, which do not want to remain hidden.

In a quest to squirm out of the dilemma, Tom must fabricate a story that will be believed in court, because the "unvarnished truth" will never pass muster.

Other cast members include undergraduate theatre majors Michael De La Rosa, Sean McGill, Mikael Walter, Katherine Garst, Sara Tangdall and Tara O'Dell.

The production is directed by guest artist Robert Bonaventura.

Graduate student assistance is provided by: Patric Vendetti, scenery; Shawn Deiger, lighting; Shannon Paulick, costumes; and Theron Seckington, technical director.

Undergraduate student assistance is provided by: Sean Kloc, sound; Trevor Snell, assistant on sound; and Elissa Shortridge, stage manager.

Tickets are $16 for general admission, $14 for faculty/staff and senior citizens, and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the Lied Center ticket office at 472-4747, or in the Temple Building lobby one hour prior to performances.
