'4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days' and 'Snow Babies' open April 11 at the Ross

Life in communist Romania comes to life in "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days," opening April 11 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

The film - winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival - is a drama set in Bucharest in the mid-1980s as Nicolae Ceaucescu and his evil dictatorship continue to reign.

In a country where abortion is outlawed, a young college student, Gabita (Laura Vasiliu), is pregnant. Unsure what to do, she turns to her roommate, Otilia (Anamaria Marinca), for help.

The pair connects with a black market doctor, Bebe (Vlad Ivanov), in order to take care of Gabita's pregnancy. The resulting 24 hours reveals a harrowing descent into a world in which the possibility of tragedy lurks around every corner.

Also opening April 11 at the Ross is "Snow Angels." Adapted from the novel of the same name, "Snow Angels" features two stories of love and loss converging. One story is of a recently separated couple attempting to pick up threads of a future when faced with tragedy. The second is about an awkward young man who in the throes of his first romance and is forced to deal with the end of his parents' marriage.

"Snow Angels" (rated R) and "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" (not rated) play through April 24. For more information, including show times, go to www.theross.org or call 472-5353.
