Russian folklore fills Moiseyev company repertoire

Moiseyev Dance Company brings its acclaimed folk dance repertoire to the Lied Center at 7:30 p.m Feb. 19. This company has earned its reputation in large part because of the genius of the company's founder, artistic director, and choreographer, Igor Moiseyev, as well as the technical skill and exuberance of the dancers.

Moiseyev says dance was "a kind of unconscious gravitation I felt all throughout my life." As a child, he entered a well-known ballet school headed by Vera Moslova and at 14 entered the Bolshoi School of Choreography. He joined the Bolshoi Ballet following his graduation at age 18, rising to become a principal dancer. Although he claimed many famous roles, choreography had become his passion. He added numerous works to the company's repertoire.

The Moiseyev Dance Company began in 1936 after Moiseyev was asked by the Soviet government to organize the first Festival of National Dance. Moiseyev traveled the country and immersed himself in the study of Russian folklore. He studied the songs, dances, customs, and traditions of the 180 ethnic cultures that then comprised the Soviet Union. Convinced by the success of the festival, Moiseyev decided to form a company to preserve the traditions of folk dancing.

Moiseyev's strong background in classical ballet would provide the basic training for his company, and his comprehensive knowledge of folklore would lead him to establish a dramatic and theatrical style for his company. They toured throughout the Soviet Union, continually adding dances from other, more remote regions. In 1955 the Moiseyev Dance Company began to tour the world, visiting more than 60 countries. The 2005 North American tour is their 12th visit to the United States. The company has more than 200 dancers and has its own orchestra and school.

A pre-performance talk will be held in the Lied's Steinhart Room 30 minutes prior to curtaiminutes prior to curtain. Tickets are $34/$29/$24, half-price for students. Call the Lied ticket office at (402) 472-4747 or (800) 432-3231 for ticket availability.
