Carson's name officially added to Department of Theatre Arts

BY KATHE ANDERSEN, FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS

The Department of Theatre Arts at UNL has been re-named The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film.

The name change was approved by the NU Board of Regents in June and by the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education in August.

The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film is named as a memorial to the legendary Carson, who graduated from NU in 1949 with a bachelor of arts degree in radio and speech (and a minor in physics) and in recognition of his generosity to his alma mater.

"The name change from the Department of Theatre Arts to The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film will no doubt bring an unprecedented national focus to the programs, and the University at large, increasing our national stature," said Paul Steger, director of The Johnny Carson School for Theatre and Film. "This change will bring with it additional possibilities in recruitment, retention and placement that have not existed in the past. Mr. Carson's legacy will live on in each of the students who are a part of the programs in Theatre and Film. Mr. Carson has been, and continues to serve as an excellent role model for our students."

In November 2004, the university announced a $5.3 million gift from Carson to the University of Nebraska Foundation to support the theatre and film programs in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Of that gift, $4.3 million is for renovation and expansion of the Temple Building.

Another $1 million created an endowment to keep performance spaces current with latest advances in lighting and sound technologies.

In July 2005, the University received a $5 million gift from the estate of Carson for endowed support of programs in theatre, film and broadcasting.
