THOROUGHLY MODERN - Performers sing and dance through the production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. The Broadway musical will play at the Lied Center for Performing Arts Dec. 7-9.

The winner of six Tony awards including Best Musical and Best Orchestration, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" is based on the Oscar-winning film of the same name. "Thoroughly Modern Millie" plays at 7:30 p.m. each of the three days.

Directed and choreographed by two-time Tony Award nominee ("Smokey Joe's Café," "The Life") Joey McKneely, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" takes audiences back to the time of the great American musical. McKneely's most recent Broadway choreography credit, "The Boy from Oz," earned star Hugh Jackman a Tony Award. McKneely has worked as performer, choreographer, and/or director on a broad range of international stage, television, and film credits including "Hope and Faith" and "Zoolander."

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" is a high-spirited musical romp featuring two songs from the original 1967 film, four standards from the 1920s, and nine new songs written by Jeanine Tesori and Dick Scanlan. This bright, new Broadway extravaganza takes place in 1922 Manhattan during the time of jazz, speakeasies, and moonshine. Midwestern girl Millie Dillmount makes her way to New York City in search of love and a "modern marriage." Rewriting all the rules of love, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" has all of New York dancing the Charleston.

Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men, and a dragon-lady of a villainess that audiences will love to hate, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment.

As part of the Lied Center's ongoing education programming, a pre-performance talk will be held in the Lied's Steinhart Room 30 minutes prior to curtain. Seating is limited in the Steinhart, and the pre-talk will begin at 7 p.m. or when the Steinhart Room is full. Laurie Lessman, Jamie Ulmer and Lettie Van Hemert will be the speakers.

Tickets for this performance are $48/$43/$38. UNL students with a valid student I.D., as well as youth age 18 and younger, may purchase tickets for half price. Call the Lied ticket office at 472-4747 for ticket availability.
