A colorful Nebraska artist is chronicled in the locally produced documentary, "Sleep Under the Sea: John Robert Weaver American Artist," premiering 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Admission is free. The film is not rated, however viewer discretion is advised due to adult language and context.

Weaver has chosen to seclude himself from the influences of big-city galleries, museums and art critics.

His unwavering determination to not compromise his art for the good of financial gain, comfort and notice has led to Weaver's legacy as an artistic genius that has produced some of the most diverse and significant American art in the last 50 years.

As Weaver approached his 70th birthday he agreed to allow his reclusive lifestyle and misunderstood abrasive behavior to be recorded over a four year period from 2001-2005.

In this film, the viewer is invited the rare opportunity to experience the daily struggles of a working artist and to observe his creativity.

The fragmented style of Weaver's personality is replicated in the style of this film, with a straight forward first person experience.

The film casts an assemblage of characters and personalities familiar to Weaver as members of a cast. Their actual identity and their relationship to the main character are not revealed until the credits.

Viewers are not given answers or reasons to many of the scenes in the film.

"Sleep Under the Sea: John Robert Weaver American Artist," is directed by Bob Stark and produced by Karen Duncan.
