PAINTED RIDER

On display in the Nomads of the Plains gallery at the University of Nebraska State Museum, this painted muslin was made around 1910 by a member of the Lakota Sioux tribe. Painted muslins were often made for whites as decorations or souveniers. Historically and stylistically, they are derived from painted panels often found in the tipi of famous warriors. The panels usually depicted important events in the warrior's career.
