Arts Entrepreneurship event Feb. 3

The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts and the College of Business Administration's Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship will present the annual Arts Entrepreneurship Day, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Arts Entrepreneurship Day highlights career opportunities for arts students outside of teaching and performing. This day-long event features sessions ranging from making money from art, obtaining financing, incorporation, protecting artists' rights, and accounting. Professionals from the visual, musical and theatrical arts will give insight on the arts business world.

Maria Schneider, 2005 Grammy-Award winning jazz composer and entrepreneur, will be the keynote speaker. Schneider studied at the Eastman School of Music. Her orchestra, The Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, has performed around the globe and is featured in a 7:30 p.m., Feb. 3 concert at the Lied Center.

Other speakers will include Michael Drapkin, the founder and executive director of the Brevard Conference on Entrepreneurship in Music at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina; Robert Denicola, UNL professor of Law; Rick Wallace, the executive director of Community Development Resources; and Glenn Friendt, director of the UNL Center for Entrepreneurship.

There will also be a panel discussion on Certificate in Arts Entrepreneurship that will include Giacomo Oliva, dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts; Ed Forde, chair of the Department of Art and Art History; John Richmond, director of the School of Music; Paul Steger, director of the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film; members of the Chiara String Quartet; and Ann Chang-Barnes, senior lecturer in the School of Music.

The cost for the workshop is $15 for the general public by Feb. 1, $20 at the door. The cost for students, faculty and staff is $10 by Feb. 1, $15 at the door. Cost includes breakfast, lunch and all handouts/materials. Fine and Performing Arts students can attend at no cost.
