Oscar hopeful 'Last King of Scotland' plays the Ross

The fictionalized political thriller "The Last King of Scotland" is playing at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center through Feb. 1.

The film - which collected a Golden Globe win for Forest Whitaker as best actor in the Drama film category - follows Scottish doctor Nick Garrigan (James McAvoy) on a Ugandan medical mission who becomes irreversibly entangled with one of the world's most barbaric figures, Idi Amin (Whitaker).

Adapted from the novel by Giles Foden, the film recounts Amin's horrific reign through the eyes of Garrigan, a semi-fictional character. After an automobile accident, Garrigan is called to treat Amin's wounds. The doctor's authoritative behavior impresses Amin, who charms Garrigan into becoming his personal physician.

Garrigan embraces a newfound life of luxury, but is unable to grasp the reality of the situation. When he does finally realize the atrocities Amin is inflicting upon his people, the terrified doctor tries to make a frantic escape before it's too late.

Joining "The Last King of Scotland" at the Ross is "Volver," a melodrama by director Pedro Almodóvar opening Jan. 26.

Featuring Penélope Cruz, "Volver" tells the story of four women in one family; Raimunda (Cruz), who is married to an unemployed worker; her teenage daughter (Yohana Cobo); Raimunda's sister Sole (Lola Dueñas), who earns a living as a hairdresser; and Raimunda and Sole's mother (Carmen Maura), who died in a fire with her husband.

"Volver," rated R for some sexual content and language, plays at the Ross through Feb. 15. "The Last King of Scotland" is rated R for some strong violence and gruesome images and sexual language.
