NEW EXHIBIT - "The Anatomy of Charley Friedman" exhibit includes this photo of Friedman's performace as "The Adenoid." The exhibit is open through Aug. 12 in the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery.

Friedman, a native of Lincoln, has pursued his distinctive aesthetic vision in drawing, sculpture, photography, performance, video and through installations. Friedman says art is the comic practice of hope, not a tragic enactment of despair, which is often the case in the contemporary art world.

Friedman earned a master of fine arts degree from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston/Tufts University program in 1996. He also attended the Skowhegan School of Art and was a resident at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha.

His work has been exhibited in group shows at the Cooper Union, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, PS1/Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art. He has had solo exhibitions at White Columns, Barbara Mathes Gallery, and the Queens Museum in New York.

The Sheldon is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For information go online to www.sheldon.unl.edu or call 472-2461.
