Pippa White to open Women's Week events

 UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

Women's Week, coordinated by the UNL Women's Center, kicks off a series of educational and entertainment events March 9. All events except the banquet are free and open to the public. Tickets for the banquet may be purchased at the Nebraska Union Information Desk for $20 ($10 for students.) Free lunches for the speaker series are available for participants who register with the Women's Center by March 7.

Following is a complete schedule of activities:

March 2-31 - Women Artists Guild display; East Union, Loft Gallery.

March 9 - "Angels and Troublemakers," a performance by Pippa White, 4 p.m., St. Mark's on the Campus (13th and R streets), a one-woman play about the great reformers, who endured threats, harassment and ridicule to end child labor, to improve conditions for the poor and oppressed, and to further women's rights.

March 10-13 - "Collaboration and Craftwork: Celebrating Women's Traditional Knowledge," 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Rotunda Gallery, Nebraska Union, an interactive, intergenerational display of quilting, knitting, beading and other crafts traditionally practiced by women. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-5 p.m. there will be demonstrations and instruction in these techniques.

March 10 - "Women as Agricultural leaders in a Global Arena," by Jeannine Lane, noon, East Union (room posted). Lane has been actively involved in agriculture since 1984, and focuses on empowering today's young women to become tomorrow's agricultural leaders.

March 10 - "Peer Educators are Campus Leaders," Peer Educator Network display, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Union Square, Nebraska Union.

March 11 - "Women in Business: What you Should Know," by Susan Puglia, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nebraska Union (room posted). Puglia will discuss a study done by leaders in the global economy of executive women and men that reveals strategies for addressing the advancement of both women and men.

March 12 - "Combating the Challenge of Society's View of Beauty While Taking Personal Responsibility for One's Own Body," by Kathyne Jackson, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nebraska Union (room posted. Jackson is the author of "Dear Diary - What my Doctor Never Told me About Liposuction." She explores her motivation for undergoing cosmetic surgery and talks about her expectations and disappointments in the experience.

March 12 - "Black Women and Revolutionary Leadership," by Pamela Hill, 6 to 8 p.m., Nebraska Union (room posted). Hill is an Afrocentric educator, lecturer, writer and activist. She is the executive director of "Liberation through Education," a venture she created as the foundation of her research and lecture series. She is a student development practitioner and has served in higher education for over a decade. She writes for a Houston newspaper, African American News and Issues, and has a weekly column, "Speak, Sistah, Speak."

March 13 - Learn Over Lunch: LGBTQ Student Leadership, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nebraska Union, (room posted). A panel of UNL student leaders who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer identified will discuss the importance of LGBTQ representation across the campus, how to find leadership opportunities, and how they got involved.

March 13 - Third Annual Women's History Month Banquet: Celebrating 30 Years of Women's (and Gender) Studies at UNL, 6 to 8 p.m., Wick Alumni Center, 1520 R St.
