'Gypsy' to play the Lied, April 8-9

The Broadway musical "Gypsy" - based on the memoirs of entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee - will play the Lied Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. April 8 and 9.

"Gypsy" tells the story of Rose, an overbearing stage mother determined to make her girls the stars of vaudeville. Rose favors her younger daughter, June, who headlines the act. Her other daughter, Louise, is relegated to the chorus.

Rose eventually turns her attention to Louise, but the older daughter discovers her own talent. Louise becomes a bigger star than Rose ever dreamed possible.

"Gypsy was written by three virtuosos of American theater - Arthur Laurents (book), Jule Styne (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics). The production features some of the biggest songs in Broadway history, including "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Rose's Turn," "Some People" and "Together, Wherever We Go."

A pre-performance talk will be offered before each performance at 7 p.m. in the Lied's Steinhart Room. Seating is limited.

Tickets are $45, $40 and $35. Students with a valid NCard and youth age 18 and younger may purchase tickets for half price.
