Jazz in June to brighten Tuesdays

The annual Jazz in June concerts featuring great jazz and food will be offered this summer at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery’s Sculpture Garden.

The free jazz concerts begin at 7 p.m. every Tuesday in June: June 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Concertgoers can bring blankets or lawn chairs for an evening of jazz in Sheldon’s outdoor sculpture garden.

In conjunction with the performances, the Jazz in June Market begins at 5 p.m. on 12th Street and offers dinner items, fresh produce, baked goods, ice cream from the UNL Dairy Store and other items for purchase. Also during Jazz in June, children can enjoy the Sheldon Super Sleuth Challenge in the gallery, and adults and children alike can visit the Sheldon’s permanent collection. Docents will be available to provide tours.

Free, guided UNL garden tours will be offered beginning east of Sheldon at 6 p.m. June 1, 8, 22 and 29. Instead of a tour on June 15, UNL’s newest sculpture, “Breach,” will be dedicated. “Breach” is a stainless-steel tree by artist Roxy Paine that was recently installed in the Donaldson Garden south of Andrews Hall. For more information on this fund-raising event, call 472-2461.

In case of rain, concerts will be in the Sheldon Auditorium.

This year’s Jazz in June performers are:

June 1: Eldar Djangirov is a talented young jazz pianist from Kyrgyzstan discovered by New York jazz enthusiast Charles McWhorter, who brought him to America to attend summer camp at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. Djangirov has won several major jazz competitions and has studied with musicians such as Vernon Howard and John Elliot.

June 8: Kendra Shank’s tone and musicianship have won her rave reviews and fans worldwide. She has headlined clubs and festivals internationally.

June 15: John Carlini is a veteran guitarist and composer whose portfolio includes Broadway, jazz and bluegrass and even the Ice Capades, with whom he was musical director. His arrangements and orchestrations have been performed and recorded by such groups as the Turtle Island String Quartet and the Kronos Quartet.

June 22: Ingrid Jensen is a trumpet virtuoso. She was selected by Down Beat Magazine as one of the “25 most important improvising musicians of the future” and rated in the top three in a number of their critic’s polls for “talent deserving wider recognition.”

June 29: The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra was founded in 1975. The ensemble’s concerts feature a variety of traditional big band compositions by artists such as Woody Herman, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. The ensemble also performs new compositions and arrangements regularly. Joining NJO on stage is Lincoln vocalist Annette Murrell.
