Irish fiddler Ivers picks way to Lied March 5

The world's pre-eminent Irish fiddler Eileen Ivers takes to the Lied Center stage for a 7:30 p.m. concert March 5 with her band, Immigrant Soul.

Claiming Eileen Ivers is the leading performer on the Irish fiddle is not much of a stretch. Ivers is the nine-time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion, the musical star of the original Riverdance production, and has performed with The Chieftains, the London Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony, and the Boston Pops, as well as being a founding member of Cherish the Ladies. In addition, Ivers' recording credits include over 80 albums and numerous movie scores.

The daughter of Irish immigrants, Ivers grew up in the culturally diverse neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. Being deeply rooted in Irish traditional music since the age of eight, Ivers represented the United States and won nine All-Ireland fiddle championships and a tenth on tenor banjo.

After graduating magna cum laude in mathematics, and while continuing her post-graduate work in mathematics, Ivers experimented with different musical genres and developed what has become her signature sound. This sound is respectful of and grounded in traditional Irish music while it embraces the rhythms of African, Latin, and American roots music. This "united nations of Irish music" is true to the heart of Irish music while embracing the multi-culturalism of American life.

L. Kent Wolgamott, entertainment reporter for the Lincoln Journal Star, will give a pre-performance talk in the Lied's Steinhart Room 30 minutes prior to curtain.

Tickets are $32/$27/$22; half price for students. Call 472-4747 for tickets.
