Online carpool service starts at UNL

 BY TROY FEDDERSON, UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

Through an online provider, Parking and Transit Services at UNL is now offering carpooling options to UNL commuters.

Called UNL Rideshare, the program is powered by AlterNetRides.com, and allows faculty, staff and students to link together online to share drive time.

"A commuter program like this fits in perfectly with the other programs parking and transit services offers," said Dan Carpenter, manager of transit planning services. "We're out to sell permits, but it's not all about making a buck.

"We are here to offer commuters to campus options. And I think this is a really good one."

Instructions and registration information for Rideshare are available by clicking a banner on the parking Web page http://parking.unl.edu. An online registration must be completed.

Potential carpoolers are linked by their location and destination. Contact is made through blind e-mails: Name, phone numbers and e-mail addresses are not displayed between users.

The parking Web site also includes a commute savings calculator, allowing users to enter information to see estimated annual savings through carpooling with one other person. For example, by splitting a 20-mile, round-trip, daily commute at current gas prices ($2.63 per gallon), annual savings are 2,250 miles, $311 in gas and 710 pounds of pollution (a gallon of gas equals approximately six pounds of pollution).

The Rideshare program is free and available to anyone. For more information, call 472-1800.
