Prairie Schooner celebrates 80 years of publication
BY SARA PIPHER, UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS
A UNL institution - and one of the nation's oldest continuously published literary journals - turns 80 this fall. Prairie Schooner's anniversary will be celebrated in conjunction with the Nebraska Book Festival, at a reception 7:30-9:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Great Plains Center. The event is free and open to the public.
"For 80 years, as a part of the UNL English Department and graduate program, we have published major mid-career and new writers from all over the world," said Hilda Raz, editor. "We celebrate the arts at the University of Nebraska and throughout the country, and we will continue to do so for as long as the university exists."
In the world of literary publishing, where most magazines last five to 10 years, reaching 80 is no small feat. Published quarterly, Prairie Schooner is consistently named among the top 10 literary magazines in the country, keeping company with publications like The New Yorker and The Atlantic Monthly.
"Our writers and readers are internationally based," Raz said. "We support Nebraska writers by publishing their work alongside the work of writers from around the nation and world."
When Prairie Schooner hit the 75-year mark, the University of Nebraska Foundation announced that a UNL alumna and former editorial assistant at the journal, Glenna Luschei, had endowed the journal - and its editor - in perpetuity.
The journal marked the 80th year by winning an O'Henry Prize, a major national literary prize. Prairie Schooner has published work by Pulitzer Prize winners, Nobel laureates, National Endowment for the Arts recipients, and MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellows. Work first published in Prairie Schooner has been reprinted or cited in the Pushcart Prize volumes, Best American Essays, Best American Short Stories, and Best American Poetry.
