'Cats' celebrates 25th year with 3-day stop at Lied Center

The first mega-musical is coming to Lincoln.

NINE LIVES - The national tour of "Cats" opens Dec. 1 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts for four performances.

 
Celebrating its 25th year, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "Cats" will play the Lied Center for Performing Arts Dec. 1-3.

"Cats" opened May 11, 1981 at the New London Theatre in the West End and became the longest running musical in British theater. In 1982, "Cats" opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City, and became the longest running musical in Broadway history in 1997. "Cats" ended an 18-year run on Sept. 10, 2000. However the "Cats" touring show continues.

Now, in its 25th year, "Cats" is the longest running continuously touring show in American theater history, spanning five continents, 26 countries and over 8.5 million audience members.

The story is based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum Book of Practical Cats," with music provided by Webber, and has won seven tony Awards.

Dates and show times for "Cats" at the Lied are 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 and Dec. 2, and 1 p.m. Dec. 3.

Pre-performance talks will be offered 30 minutes prior to curtain in the Lied's Steinhart Room. Speaker duties will be rotated through Courtney Piccoli, Angelia Onuoha, Jon Gathje and Sandy Fisher Van Pelt. Seating is limited.

Tickets are $57, $52 and $47. UNL students with a valid NCard and youth 18 and under may purchase tickets for half price.
