ON DISPLAY - "Embarking on The Sea of The Bleeding Hare," a painting by Roy De Forest has been added to the Sheldon's collection.

The painting, "Embarking on The Sea of The Bleeding Hare," was donated by James C. and Rhonda Seacrest to the Nebraska Art Association. Rhonda Seacrest is the president of the association, the dedicated non-profit group of the Sheldon.

The work, painted in 1978 and on view at the Sheldon, features animals, a bright palette of reds and scarlets and an active acrylic surface.

"The addition of an outstanding painting by Roy De Forest to the Sheldon extends our ability to document in depth important developments in American art beyond the East Coast," said Janice Driesbach, director of the Sheldon. "De Forest has been a key figure in the development of postwar art in the San Francisco Bay area both through his artwork and through his distinguished career on the faculty at the University of California, Davis."

Born in North Platte, Neb., and raised in Yakima, Washington, De Forest has been a central figure in the Northern California "Funk" art movement - a response to abstract expressionism that dominated the aesthetic canon and art schools in post-WWII America. De Forest attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and received degrees at San Francisco State College in the 1950s.

De Forest's work has been featured in more that 75 one-person exhibitions throughout the country.

Other recent pieces acquired by the Sheldon include: "Jackson," by Robert Arneson, 1987, enamel over lithograph paper; "Untitled (Al-Shiva and Planet)" by Wallace Berman, 1970, verifax collage; "Wind Mask East" by Willie Cole, 1990, blow dryers; and "Range 2006" by Jennifer Ghormley, color reduction woodcut.
