OLLI program drives toward $1 million endowment

 UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

The UNL Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is driving toward a $1 million endowment.

The program, associated with the College of Education and Human Sciences, will qualify for the Osher Foundation endowment if it can draw a minimum of 500 members. The program now has 445 members.

OLLI will host an open house 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 6 at the Champions Club. The open house will include information on the institute and Chancellor Harvey Perlman will discuss the advantages of UNL being part of the Osher Foundations' initiative for lifelong learning at institutions nationwide.

"The support of UNL faculty members who have taught in the lifelong program at UNL since 1992 has continually indicated to our community that UNL reaches beyond the campus to serve its constituents," said Deanna Eversoll, OLLI project coordinator. "The leaders of the program welcome your ideas for reaching the magic '500 membership-marker' that will in turn allow future lifelong learners to benefit from today's actions."

The UNL OLLI program has established a diverse curriculum for "50+ learners." Programs are designed for learning strictly for the joy of learning; participants are not graded and do not earn college credits.

Neuroscientists have indicated that research supports the advantage of lifelong learning that embraces the novel and complex to exercise the brain daily - while also making sure to exercise one's body, according to Eversoll.

The Osher Foundation was founded in 1977 by Bernard Osher, a businessman and patron of the arts and education. The organization's philanthropy has aided programs in all 50 states.

If the OLLI program qualifies for the endowment, it will be managed through the University of Nebraska Foundation.

"With dedication and the support of interested lifelong learners in our 220,000-plus population of Lincoln, we can succeed," Eversoll said. "If 500 lifelong learners invest in UNL OLLI by paying a year membership of $50, they will be making a $25,000 investment to gain a million dollar endowment to the University of Nebraska Foundation."

For more information, contact Eversoll at deversoll1@unl.edu. Individuals can RSVP for the OLLI open house by May 3 to 472-6265.
