Cornhusker Summer Music Games are July 25
The UNL Band Program will host the Cornhusker Summer Music Games Drum Corps International competition July 25 at Memorial Stadium.
Drum Corps International is a nonprofit youth organization serving junior drum and bugle corps around the globe. From modest beginnings in 1972, DCI has developed into a powerful youth activity with artistic and organizational influence on the world's drum and bugle corps, marching bands, and related activities. Thirty-five World Championships in 17 cities have provided entertainment to more than half a million people in stadiums and to millions more through a PBS telecast. Regional, focus, sponsored and sanctioned shows have brought the drum corps experience to several million more in hundreds of towns and cities throughout North America.
This summer, DCI corps will again travel throughout North America, starting in early June and culminating in August at the World Championships in Pasadena, Calif. In competition, a team of judges evaluates each corps in eight separate captions: music effect, ensemble music, brass performance, percussion performance, visual effect, ensemble visual, visual performance and color guard.
There will be six corps performing at 15-minute intervals at the July 25 appearance at UNL: The Academy of Tempe, Ariz. (reigning Division II Champions); the Blue Stars of La Crosse, Wis.; The Cadets sponsored by YEA! (2005 and five-time World Champions); Phantom Regiment of Rockford, Ill.; Santa Clara Vanguard, Santa Clara, Calif. (six-time World Champions); and the Troopers of Casper, Wyo.
Tickets ($27, $22 and $17) are available exclusively through the DCI ticketing service, www.dci.org or (800) 495-7469. Handling fees will be added to all advance sales. Group discounts are available for groups of 10 or more.
For more information go online to www.unl.edu/band/dcishow or call 472-2505.
Income generated by the show supports the mission and programs of the School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.
Other sponsors for the event are the UNL Athletics Department, DCI, and 102.7 KFRX.
