Movies on the Green open July 12 with 'Kramer vs. Kramer'

The stars will shine again on City Campus as the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and the University Program Council unspool the annual Jensen's Cinema 16 Collection Movies on the Green series.

Opening July 12 and continuing the next five Thursday evenings, the series begins with the moving adaptation of Avery Corman's novel, "Kramer vs. Kramer," by Robert Benton. The film about the aftermath of divorce stars Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep.

Other movie classics featured by Movies on the Green are Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," (July 19); Robert Altman's "M*A*S*H" starring Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould, (July 26); the adaptation of Lionel Bart's musical version of the Dickens classic "Oliver!", (Aug. 2); the filmed version of Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Our Town," (Aug. 9) and Anthony Mann's classic Western "The Man From Laramie" starring James Stewart and Arthur Kennedy (Aug. 16).

All of the screenings are presented on the grass in front of Kimball Recital Hall. Screenings are free and open to the public and begin at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.).

Popcorn and soda are sold at the screenings. Film commentary written by Jensen's Cinema 16 Collection donor Jerry Jensen will be distributed free of charge.

Movie-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Co-sponsored by the Ross and UPC, the series is presented with the support of and donations from the Lincoln Arts Council, the Rogers Foundation, Jerry Jensen, Kimball Hall, IATSE Local 151, Friends of MRRMAC, and US Bank.
