'American Narratives' exhibit explores artists and their times
BY TOM WHITE, SHELDON ART GALLERY
Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery's collections document the development of art in the United States through the American experience, offering insightful narratives into the artists and their times.
| | AMERICAN NARRATIVE - The painting "The Guide" by Walt Kuhn (1931, oil on canvas) is included in the American Narratives exhibit at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery.
| | This 2007-08 permanent collection installation, opening Aug. 3 with tours and a special First Friday reception, will offer galleries focused on Realism and Impressionism;, American Modernism, The Beats, Mid-Century American Art, Recent Narratives, and Contemporary Views.
Favorite pieces will include Lilian Westcott Hale's "The Convalescent (Zeffy in Bed)," Marsden Hartley's "Painting No. 1, 1913," William Burroughs' "Pride," Roy Lichtenstein's "Charge of the Light Brigade," Fritz Scholder's "American Portrait with Dog" and Sean Scully's "Barcelona White Bar."
During the opening reception, 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 3, Jan Driesbach, director of the Sheldon, and curator Sharon Kennedy will lead visitors on exhibition tours. In the Beats gallery, Randall Snyder and Scott Anderson from the UNL School of Music will perform "Following Lee Konitz," a reading with music from Jack Kerouac's novel, "Visions of Cody."
During the Sheldon Sunday Gallery Walk at 2 p.m. Sept. 9, Driesbach will discuss Scully's "Barcelona White Bar," a significant addition to Sheldon's collection of abstract paintings and on view for the first time in Lincoln.
Both events are free and the public is invited.
In November a portraiture gallery will replace the Realism and Impressionism gallery on view from August through October. This gallery will welcome John Singleton Copley's "Nicholas Boylston," an American masterpiece on an extended loan to the Sheldon from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
