Alloy Orchestra to play silent movie scores Oct. 10-11 at the Ross

The Alloy Orchestra - a three-man musical ensemble that performs live accompaniment to classic silent films - will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 and 11 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

The group will perform their score to "The Eagle" on Oct. 10 and to "Underworld" on Oct. 11. Receptions will follow both performances.

The group premiered the score to "The Eagle" at New York's Lincoln Center on April 21, 2006. "The Eagle" is the story of a cavalry man in 19th century Russia. The film features Rudolph Valentino and Vilma Banky in the lead roles. The pair also stared in Valentino's most famous film, "Son of the Shiek."

Ross patrons will be among the first to hear the Alloy Orchestra's new score to "Underworld." The group premiered the score at the New York Film Festival, held Oct. 4 at the Walter Reed Theater at Lincoln Center.

"Underworld" was directed by Joseph von Sternberg and stars Evelyn Brent, George Bancroft and Clive Brook. Winner of the first (1927) Academy Award for Best Screenplay, "Underworld"is considered the first gangster film, and one of the first film noirs.

In its 17th year, the Alloy Orchestra began to perform with the original score for "Metropolis" in 1991. In each of the last 15 years, the group has composed a new score and premiered it at the Telluride Film Festival.

An unusual combination of found percussion and state-of-the-art electronics gives the Alloy Orchestra the ability to create any sound.

Admission to the Alloy Orchestra performances is $20 for adults, $15 for children, students, seniors and Friends of the Ross. Advance tickets are available at the Ross.
