Ceramic artists to discuss craft Feb. 7-8 at Sheldon

During a three-day visit to the UNL Department of Art and Art History, three renowned ceramic artists will give lectures in Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery's Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium.

Linda Sikora will talk at 4 p.m. and Steven Heinemann at 5 p.m. Feb. 7, and Matthew Metz will talk at 11 a.m. Feb. 8. The lectures, sponsored by the UNL Clay Club and Sheldon, are free and open to the public.

Sikora maintains a pottery site in Alfred Station, N.Y. During the academic year, she is an associate professor and division head of ceramic art at Alfred University School of Art and Design in Alfred, N.Y. She studied at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Sikora's work is exhibited and collected internationally.

Heinemann lives and works in Ontario, Canada. Since completing his MFA (Alfred University, 1983), he has taught widely in Canada and the United States. His residencies have taken him to the United States, Holland, Hungary and Korea. Galleries in Canada, Europe and the United States represent him and his work is in numerous public collections. In 1996, Heinemann was granted the Saidye Bronfman Award, Canada's highest recognition of achievement in contemporary craft.

Metz is a ceramic artist in Alfred, N.Y. His influences include Asian pottery traditions, Greek and Roman pots, early American decorative arts and other folk traditions. The images are often abstract but deeply personal. He received a B.F.A. from Ball State University and a M.F.A. from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. His work can be found in the Arkansas Arts Center, Minneapolis Institute for the Arts, and the Archie Bray Foundation.

The artists will give demonstrations 9-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. Feb. 7 and 9-11 a.m. Feb. 8 in 118 Richards Hall. For more information, go to www.sheldon.unl.edu.
