Quilt museum's 'Green Week' begins April 19

The International Quilt Study Center and Museum will host its first Green Week April 19-25.

The Earth-friendly week includes activities for students, families and professionals in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day. The new quilt center is the first sustainable "green" building designed and built from the ground up at UNL.

All Green Week activities and tours are free with paid admission to the museum.

The week kicks off at 10 a.m. April 19. Saturday's activities will be family-oriented and include gallery and art-making activities, and a building tour at 11 a.m. highlighting the environmentally friendly features of the building.

The museum will offer exhibition tours and green building tours that emphasize environmental friendliness at 2 p.m. April 20 and 11 a.m. April 23.

On Earth Day, April 22, a noon lecture and tour will be led by UNL Facilities Management and Planning manager Alan Wedige.

The museum will host its first college night, 5 to 8 p.m. April 23. The event will include stress-relieving activities such as yoga sessions, food, tours and entertainment to soothe students' end-of-semester tension.

On April 24, a brown-bag lunch and talk will feature local recycling information and tips at noon.

The week will conclude on Arbor Day (April 25) with the planting of two trees at noon. ReTree Nebraska, a UNL cooperative partnership encouraging the planting of a million new trees in Nebraska, will have displays and information. Environmentally friendly door prizes will be given away and rewards will be given to visitors who travel to the center by any transportation means besides an automobile. The center will have information available on making the home green and how the International Quilt Study Center decided to "go green."
