St. Petersburg Ballet offers dance classics April 25-26

The richness of Russian ballet is coming to campus.

The St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre will perform two classic pieces, "Romeo and Juliet" on April 25 and "Carmen" on April 26, at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Both performances are at 7:30 p.m.

"Romeo and Juliet," a ballet in two acts, tells Shakespeare's tragic tale of star-crossed lovers trapped by a feud between the Montague and Capulet families. "Carmen," a ballet in four acts, features the story of the seductive gypsy and her lover, Don José.

Founded in 1966, the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre is one of the most distinguished classical companies in Russia. It is also one of the few companies in Russia that has been given the honor and the same highest official status by the Russian government as "State and Academic Ballet," along with the Kirov and Bolshoi State and Academic Ballet theatres.

Sarah Brown, lecturer of dance in the UNL School of Music, will give a pre-performance talk at 7 p.m. in the Lied Center's Steinhart Room. Seating is limited.

Tickets are $40, $35 and $30. Students with a valid NCard, as well as youth age 18 and younger, may purchase tickets for half price.

For more information, go to www.liedcenter.org or call 472-4747.
