While Americans may be devoted to the larger concept of democracy, research by John Hibbing and Elizabeth Theiss-Morse shows we find some democratic processes difficult and even distasteful.

Construction begins Monday on 'Big T'
Work will begin Oct. 18 on the "Big T" phase of the Antelope Valley project. The Big T will connect the new intersections at 14th and Military streets and 17th and Y streets with a road over the railroad tracks, as well as widen and improve Holdrege Street from east of Memorial Stadium to 16th Street.

Kooser Featured at D.C. Events
UNL visiting professor Ted Kooser speaks Oct. 9 at the National Book Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. As the nation's poet laureate, he was a featured presenter in the poetry pavilion, one of a dozen literature pavilions at the festival. About 300 attended his reading, and dozens waited in lines for Kooser to sign their books. The festival ended several days of events for Kooser in Washington; he gave his first reading at the Library of Congress on Oct. 7 and gave other interviews and readings during the week. 6 honored at Masters Week
The Masters Week program at UNL celebrates its 40th anniversary this year by again bringing outstanding alumni back to campus to meet with students to share their knowledge and experiences. This year, six alumni will be on campus from Oct. 27-30 concluding with the Homecoming football game.

Eisentrager-Howard to show 2 exhibitions
Two exhibitions open soon at the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall. "Introductions: An Exhibition of the Work of New Studio Art Faculty" and "Kim Cridler: Domestic Ornamentation, Recent Sculpture" will be on display from Oct. 25 through Nov. 22. A closing reception will be from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 22 in the gallery.

Theatrix, the student theatre organization at UNL, continues its season with Eve Ensler's Necessary Targets. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21, 22 and 23 and at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 22 in 301 Temple Building. Admission is $5 at the door only.

Capitol Steps poke fun at D.C. politics
Just in time for the election, The Capitol Steps "put the mock in democracy" as they return to the Lied Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28.

Pilobolus Dance Theatre will bring its pioneering modern dance to the Lied Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26.

Ballet of India performs Oct. 20
Drawing from ancient Indian folklore and mythology, Gajamukha - Temple Dance Ballet of India will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Glass concerto premieres on NPRN
A new work composed by Philip Glass and performed by piano soloist Paul Barnes, Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai and the Victor Yampolsky-directed Omaha Symphony Orchestra will be broadcast on the Nebraska Public Radio Network series "Nebraska Concerts" on a special night and time. Tune in for the broadcast premiere of Concerto No. 2 (After Lewis and Clark) at 7 p.m. Oct. 18.

Rowan's work displayed at Peru
Paintings and sculptures by Patrick Rowan, UNL art and art history professor emeritus, are on display in an exhibition titled "The Irish are Coming" now through Nov. 5 in the PSC Art Gallery on the campus of Peru State College in Peru.

Filmmaker to appear at Ross screenings
Canadian documentary filmmaker Ron Mann will appear at screenings of his films on Oct. 22 and 23 to discuss his work with the audiences at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.
