Students in professor Gail Kendall's beginning and intermediate ceramics classes last spring created food-themed ceramic tiles installed this summer in the Selleck Hall facility. The tiles were part of the dining hall upgrade and funded by a $2,000 donation from University Housing to the UNL Ceramics Guild.

"They are awesome," said Ellen Hardy, program coordinator for the Selleck Dining Hall. "The are creative, colorful and completely unique."

Kendall, professor of Art and Art History, was intrigued by the project after a discussion with Dave Erickson, an architect with Erickson Sullivan Architects.

"It was exciting that the architects and University Housing were embracing the idea of handmade artwork in a commercial plan," Kendall said.

Each of Kendall's student created two, foot-square, relief tiles (48 total) based on themes found in the serving area at Selleck, such as Soup, Deli, Breakfast, Italian and Desserts/Ice Cream.

The tiles were fired and glazed in May by Susan Dewsap, a graduate teaching assistant, and installed in July.
