Van Oort's lecture, "Speaking or Singing? Translating Early Music" will be 7 p.m. Nov. 5 in the auditorium of Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the lecture.

A combination lecture/recital, Van Oort's appearance will include a short history of the differences between the fortepiano and the modern piano, and a demonstration of the consequences for actual performance.

After completing his modern piano degree at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 1983, van Oort studied fortepiano with Stanley Hoogland, also at the Royal Conservatory. He subsequently studied with Malcolm Bilson at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where he earned a doctor of musical arts in historical performance practice (1993).

Van Oort has performed and appeared at festivals around the world.

The Geske Lecture series is intended to advance the understanding and appreciation of the arts with creative writing and thinking that reflect the importance of historical perspective of the arts.
