DEAD DRUMMER - Sheldon visitors are greeted by a skeleton drummer, desinged by UNL art student Eric Little. The sculptures will be on display through Nov. 4 at the Sheldon.

The Sheldon event — held in connection with the ongoing exhibition “Seasonal’ Celebrations, Daily Life — Photographs by Graciela Iturbide” — included an ofrenda (altar) that allowed an opportunity to honor loved ones. Other draws included traditional music by Mariachi Luna y Sol, dance by Grupo Folklorico Sangre Azteca, the play “Senora Tortuga” presented by Lincoln High School theatre students, traditional food and art making.

Paper mache sculptures were created by students in UNL’s Art in the Community class led by Sandra Williams, associate professor of art and art history. The class worked with Lincoln Public Schools students at Park Middle School and in the Arts and Humanities Focus Program. Together, the students planned and built the sculptures and created papel picados (banner-length paper cutouts). Williams’ students also led the art making projects during the celebration.
