Obituary — Robert Fuller

A celebration of life is set for May 26 for retired professor of physics Robert Fuller, who died April 9. Fuller suffered a brain aneurysm last Thanksgiving; he was 76.

Fuller was a faculty member from 1969 until his retirement in 2005. During that period, he was a visiting professor at The Open University in England, the U.S. Air Force Academy, University California-Berkeley and the U.S. Military Academy. Early in his career, he taught at the Methodist English High School in Rangoon, Burma from 1958 to 1961 where one of his students was Aung San Suu Kyi, who eventually became a human rights activists and winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace.

A native of Indiana, Fuller earned a bachelor’s of science in physics from the then Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (now the Missouri University of Science and Technology) and his M.S. and Ph.D. in physics from University of Illinois.

Fuller was known for his teaching; he twice earned college awards for distinguished teaching (1973 and 1986) and was recognized nationally for his teaching excellence. Among other accolades, he received Insight magazine’s “One of the 10 best college professors in America,” in 1987; a Robert A. Millikan Medal for outstanding contributions to the teaching of physics, American Association of Physics Teachers in 1992; Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award, University of Nebraska, in 1993; was a named a member of UNL’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers in 1995; and received the “Doc Elliott ” Award from the UNL Alumni Association in 2011. He was an active member of the American Association of Physics Teachers and was its national president in 1980.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Fuller; daughter, Amy Fuller and husband Frank Wilson and their children, Joe and David, all of Portland, Ore; daughter, Laurie Fuller and partner Erica Meiners, Chicago, Ill.; son, Andrew Fuller and partner Maro Sevastopoulos, Portland, Ore.; Air Force Cadet daughter and family, Chiquita O’Cain and husband Bruce and their children, Joshua, Caleb and Jonluke, Great Falls, Va.; brothers, sisters-in-law, Richard M. and Judith Fuller, Falcon Heights, Minn.; Harry and Kate Fuller, Ashland, Ore.

The May 26 service will be at First United Methodist Church. Memorials are suggested to the church or the U.S. Campaign for Burma.
