Robert Arneson, Model for California Artist, 1982, glazed ceramic, from the estate of the artist, is one of the works featured during “Big Idea: The Maquettes of Robert Arneson” from Feb. 21 to May 16 at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. Courtesy of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery.

The Nebraska Art Association will offer a members-only opening reception for this event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in the gallery.

Also, the association will present “Pollock by Arneson,” a public slide lecture by Daniel Rosenfeld, at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the gallery. Rosenfeld is the director of the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine. He will address how Arneson admired Jackson Pollock, whom he used as a theme for drawings, maquettes, or three-dimensional sketches, and full-scale sculptures over the years. This event is $3 for Nebraska Art Association members, $5 for non-members, and students are free.

Arneson was a witty and iconoclastic Bay area artist known for his figurative ceramics and contemporary sculptures. This exhibition displays his maquettes, works on paper and two bronze sculptures. It also draws from the artist’s own collection of more than 100 maquettes in terra cotta and glazed ceramic.
