Lentz gains collection of Asian books

The Lentz Center for Asian Culture has received a gift of 558 books and 584 catalogues donated by Margaret Hilmes of Kansas City, Mo. This group of materials will be known as the Hilmes Art Book and Catalogue Study Collection. It is housed in the Lentz Center for Asian Culture library and is available during museum hours by appointment.

Hilmes' books were accumulated during her career as a senior appraiser of Asian art. Hilmes collected auction and exhibition catalogues, books and art magazines. These materials are helpful for those studying art for making stylistic and quality comparisons, or for anyone interested in learning more about Asian art.

The gift has enabled the center's library to update its run of Arts of Asia, a collector's magazine, and to enhance its Sotheby and Christie auction catalog collection. Selections among the books will facilitate the study of Japanese prints, ivories, bamboo carvings, Japanese ceramics and painting, and the art of Korea.
