Medea launches University Theatre season

UNL Theatre's University Theatre opens its 104th season with the classic Greek tragedy Medea by Robinson Jeffers, freely adapted from Euripides.

The production, directed by associate professor Virginia Smith, will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7, 8, 9 and 13, 14, 15 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 17 in Howell Theatre, first floor of the Temple Building. A sneak preview performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6.

Medea tells the story of a woman scorned in one of the world's legendary dramas. Abandoned by her husband, Jason, Medea's revenge leads to the slaughter of beauty and innocence. According to director Smith, "We have chosen to tell this story that stirs the thunder and passion of the gods in masks that represent the characters as archetypes." Costume designer Cate Wieck designed the sculpted masks.

Tickets are $14, $12 for faculty/staff and senior citizens, and $10 student/youth. Groups of 20 or more may purchase tickets at 50 percent of the regular price. Tickets may be purchased from the Lied Center Ticket Office and one hour before performances in the designated theatre lobby. Tickets to the Oct. 6 preview are $5 at the door. Call the Lied at 472-4747 for tickets.
