Exhibit features insects, patterns

Jennifer Angus of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, will install her newest work, "Carpet Beetles: Patterns from the Orient," at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery. It will be on display from Nov. 19 to Dec. 17 on large, low, floor pedestals. This is a departure from her work of the past four years, in which she created installations composed of insects pinned to a wall in repeating patterns.

An opening lecture by Angus will begin at 5 p.m. Nov. 19 in room 11 of the Home Economics building. A reception will follow until 7 p.m. on the second floor after the lecture. This exhibition and lecture are sponsored by the Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, the Department of Entomology and the Textiles, Clothing and Design Department.

Angus uses insects to reference pattern, both from textiles and wallpaper. In this case, her reference will be patterns from Oriental Carpets. She derives her design inspiration from traditional rug-weaving areas of the world, such as Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, western China and India.

"Although very little of what I currently do involves cloth, my work is nonetheless informed by the textile tradition," Angus said.

Angus will work with students while at UNL and will recruit students to assist in the installation of the exhibition. Student groups from the departments of entomology and textiles, clothing and design will offer tours of the exhibition to groups.

The gallery is in the Home Economics Building. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call Wendy Weiss at 472-6370.
