McFerrin's jazz style coming back to Lied

Improvisational jazz singer Bobby McFerrin will return to the Lied Center for Performing Arts with a 7:30 p.m. show on Nov. 12.

McFerrin uses his four-octave range, improvisation and audience interaction to create performances that are never the same from show to show. He showcases various vocal techniques and combines jazz, folk and many world music influences, such as choral, a cappella and classical music, with his personality.

McFerrin has won 10 Grammy Awards and created one of the most popular tunes of the late 20th century, "Don't Worry, Be Happy." He's also been the subject of a 60 Minutes segment and an entire edition of Nightline with Ted Koppel.

In 1990, McFerrin conducted the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra for the first time. He now splits his time between conducting and performing solo while also educating about music. As part of his visit to Lincoln, McFerrin will participate in several residencies with local music students.

Matt Landis, a Lincoln actor and musician, will give a talk 30 minutes before curtain in the Lied's Steinhart Room.

Tickets for this performance are $45/$40/$35; tickets are half-price for UNL students and those 18 and younger.

Call the Lied ticket office at 472-4747 or (800) 432-3231 or visit this site for tickets.
