Griffin offers March 7 lecture on art collecting
William Griffin, president of GRIFFIN in Santa Monica, Calif., will discuss his experience in working with collectors beginning at 5:30 p.m. March 7 in the Ethel S. Abbott auditorium at Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery.
GRIFFIN is one of the largest West Coast galleries specializing in international, contemporary art. The gallery opened in 1997 and is located in a remodeled aircraft factory.
With an international presence and a following of major collectors, GRIFFIN has extensive experience in emerging and mid-career artists and secondary blue-chip artists from the West. He has worked directly with most major museums located in the United States and Europe and has helped build some of the most significant private art foundations, including Sammlung Rosenkranz centered in Berlin.
Griffin's lecture accompanies the exhibition, "Contemporary Art: 1980 to the Present," which opens March 4 at the Sheldon. The new exhibition offers a glimpse of the pluralism in contemporary art and how it is represented in the Sheldon's permanent collection. Traditional subjects such as landscapes, portraits and still lifes are represented, as are images from popular culture, including comics.
Visitors may preview the exhibition from 5 to 8 p.m. March 3, during First Friday's Martini Madness, a public reception with appetizers and a cash bar. Admission to the exhibition and William Griffin's talk is free.
The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday; and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, go online to www.sheldon.unl.edu or call 472-2461.
