'Boys of Baraka' and 'Mandalay' open March 31

On Sept. 12, 2002, 20 "at-risk" 12-year-old boys from inner-city Baltimore left home to attend classes in Africa.

Their journey to Kenya and back has been captured in the documentary, "The Boys of Baraka," which opens March 31 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

The movie follows four boys - Devon, Montrey, Richard and his brother Romesh - as they attend seventh and eighth grade at Baraka, an experimental boarding school in Kenya that specializes in dealing with troubled American boys from the inner city. Faced with a strict academic and disciplinary program and the freedom to be normal teenage boys, the youth begin a journey toward putting their lives on a fresh path.

"The Boys of Baraka" (unrated) and "Manderlay" are showing at the Ross through April 13.
