The Donald and Lorena Meier Commons and Plaza will be located in the southwest corner of the campus green space bounded by the Nebraska Union, Selleck Quadrangle and the Kauffman Academic Residential Center. It will feature a brick-paved seating area and a limestone colonnade structure to serve as a gateway to the area.

The project is made possible with private support from Donald and Lorena Meier of Winnetka, Ill. The Meiers established multiple student scholarship programs at the University of Nebraska Foundation to benefit students across campus.

Donald Meier, a 1941 business and broadcasting graduate of NU, enjoyed a long career in television production and is credited with creating and producing the popular Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom" program.

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved naming the area in recognition of Meiers' longtime support and generous plans for future scholarships.

"A number of new flowering trees and shrubs will be added to the area around the plaza," said Eileen Bergt, director of Landscape Services.

Construction is scheduled to end in December, and a dedication event is planned in spring 2008. Hampton Commercial Construction is the project contractor.
