Fire prevention trailer tours state

BY SANDI ALSWAGER KARSTENS, IANR NEWS SERVICE

A new Nebraska Forest Service educational trailer is bringing fire prevention and fire-wise information to Nebraska communities.

The custom-designed, 12-foot-long trailer is making its way to Nebraska communities susceptible to forest and wildfires, said Don Westover, fire program leader for the Nebraska Forest Service in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at UNL.

"We hope to take it around the state and emphasize the importance of fire prevention and fire-wise treatments people can do to their property," Westover said.

The trailer has two side doors that fold out, offering 24-feet of display surfaces, he said. In the center, a rear-projection screen can be hooked up to a laptop or DVD player to project videos and PowerPoints to people outside.

When the trailer is closed and traveling across the state, it offers scenes of forest fire damage and Smokey bear.

"Traveling to these communities will allow forested landowners to hear first-hand information about making their homes and forests less susceptible to damaging crown fires like those that occurred last summer in communities like Valentine, Chadron and Harrison."

Fire-wise means doing things to the home and around the home to prevent the spread of a wildfire to the property, Westover said.

Fire prevention information available on the trailer includes information about burning permits, camp fire safety and fire prevention on the farm and ranch.

The trailer was funded through a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant received in 2006.
