Lied expands discount for faculty, staff
UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS
The Lied Center for Performing Arts is hoping to draw more faculty and staff in its 18th season.
Unveiling the new season on July 20, Lied officials also expanded the discount faculty and staff receive on ticket purchases. According to Brenda Weyers, marketing coordinator for the Lied, faculty and staff will receive a 10 percent discount for up to two tickets purchased for each show. In previous years, the discount applied for one ticket.
"We listened to the comments we were receiving from fellow UNL employees and wanted to acknowledge their importance to the Lied Center, and in turn, encourage their support of our programming," said Charles Bethea, executive director of the Lied. "UNL faculty and staff have a stake in the Lied Center as part of UNL's educational mission and in reaching out to the people of Nebraska. Acknowledging them in this way felt appropriate."
The Lied's 18th season will feature more than 40 performing artists, including six Broadway shows.
The Broadway performances open Oct. 26 with a four-show run of the rock musical, "Hairspray." Other Broadway shows include perennial favorite "Annie;" a tribute to the music of Johnny Cash, "Ring of Fire;" "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," based on the popular movie; the timeless classic "Gypsy;" and "Movin' Out," the smash hit collaboration between pop artist Billy Joel and dancer/choreographer Twyla Tharp.
The season opens Sept. 11 with comedian Joan Rivers. The Lied comedy line-up also includes Garrison Keiller, host of "Prairie Home Companion," on Feb. 11.
If you're into challenging live dramatic theatre, L.A. Theatre Works will return to the Lied Center with a new docudrama "Top Secret: The Battle for The Pentagon Papers." Lincoln's Aquila Theatre Company will bring "Catch-22" and Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" to the Lied stage.
The season also features a number of musical experiences, including "Solid Blues," the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the State Symphony Orchestra of Mexico and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
The popular Free at 6 series returns for a fourth season featuring a variety of local artists including the Executive Steel Band, the Kara Leigh Jazz Combo, PianoFOURte, echopoetico, The Lightning Bugs, and The Athenian Dancers.
The season marks the 11th year of the Family Series which offers family-friendly events.

Brochures are available at the Lied Center ticket office. Season tickets are currently available for purchase. Individual event tickets, including those for Club/Carson shows, go on sale at 11 a.m., Aug. 20.
