Year in Review 2003-2004

I'm pleased to offer to the campus community and to our friends and supporters this special edition of the UNL Scarlet that highlights and summarizes just a few of our major accomplishments at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Academic Year 2003-2004.

In previous years, it has been the tradition of the chancellor to recite a litany of great events in the annual State of the University Address. This year, I decided to widen the audience and we've published this edition to help spread the word, and to the relief of those who attend the speech, shorten the speech.

There are many great stories at the university - from our record-breaking receipt of $91.5 million in external research grants and contracts, to our outstanding student achievers, to our outpouring of volunteers who helped neighbors in Lancaster County clean up in May after devastating storms. It is people who drive these stories - people who make a difference and who make UNL a great university.

As you can imagine, there are many more items than we have space to print. Every effort has been made to be inclusive and to highlight a wide variety of people, achievements and happenings on campus. We regret that not every accomplishment can be listed, and we know we are just skimming the surface.

Thanks to the staff of the Office of Communications, who put this special edition together, and to all who contributed.

I hope you enjoy it.

Harvey Perlman
Chancellor
