Duo looks into social impacts of infertility

UNL sociologists Lynn White and Julia McQuillan and researchers from four other institutions are studying the social and family implications of infertility and its treatment. The group won a $2.5 million grant in March from the National Institutes of Health for a five-year study.

One third of American women will experience fertility problems during their reproductive years. Little data exists on infertile couples who do not seek treatment or on the mental, social and behavioral outcomes of fertility treatments. Although science has made advances, social and psychological questions have remained unanswered. For instance, why do only about half of infertile couples seek treatment?

The researchers will survey 7,500 women and 2,300 of their partners, and the inclusion of males is unique.

The study will explore what is known as "help-seeking theory" to learn what motivates or prompts people to seek medical help. Scientists are interested in learning why people delay treatment and what might promote earlier help-seeking.
