Company helps track mad cow disease

A company headed by a UNL professor helped crack the genetic history of the Washington state cow found to be infected with "mad cow disease," or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, in December 2003.

In addition, expertise and resources derived from UNL research played a central role in discovering the origin and parentage of the cow, as well as the genetic information necessary for tracking its progeny to ensure food safety.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture turned to GeneSeek, Inc., a company founded by Daniel Pomp of the animal science department and Abraham Oommen, who isolated the cow's genetic traits.

The software package developed to manage the test data was created by i2rd Inc., a startup company founded by UNL electrical engineers Don Nelson and Mulin Chen. The genetic sequencing was accomplished in part by equipment developed by Li-Cor Inc., based upon technology patents licensed from UNL.

GeneSeek and i2rd are companies that have taken advantage of the services provided by the technology business incubator operated by the University of Nebraska Technology Park and are located at the park.
