Helping parents prepare for school
UNL, UNMC and Lincoln Public Schools are partners in a five-year, $5 million project to empower parents to become more actively engaged in their children's learning and success.
Sue Sheridan, educational psychology, is lead investigator on the project with psychologist Carolyn Pope Edwards.
Parents are the first and best teachers of very young children, Sheridan said, but many parents lack the skills that could help them prepare their children for success in school; others are intimidated or lack experience with school settings.
The project will look to promote strengths within three areas for parents: their warmth and sensitivity; their encouragement of their young child's emerging curiosity and autonomy; and their active participation in their child's learning and literacy, both in the home and in child care and schools.
About 600 children and their families will be recruited. The children will be monitored over time to measure the effects of implementing the parent intervention early.
