The University of Nebraska Board of Regents will consider an extension of the contract for employment for NU President James B. Milliken during their Dec. 11 meeting in Varner Hall.

Committee meetings begin at 8 a.m., with the board meeting to follow at 10:30 a.m. The committee meetings include presentations on economic development strategies, area health education centers, student debt, and a report on deferred maintenance initiatives across the NU system.

Regent Kent Schroeder, chairman of the board, said the proposed five-year extension of Milliken’s contract is being recommended following a comprehensive review of the president’s job performance. The review included feedback from members of the Board of Regents, university and campus leaders, and agriculture, business and political leaders.

“Since his arrival, President Milliken has risen among the ranks of higher education leaders and is now recognized as one of the top leaders in education,” said Schroeder. “Nebraskans should be gratified that their university is in the hands of an education visionary.”

Milliken’s appointment as NU’s president began on Aug. 1, 2004, with an initial term of three years, to July 31, 2007. In July 2006, the regents voted to extend his contract to July 31, 2010. The proposal before the board on Dec. 11 would extend Milliken’s contract to July 31, 2015. Other terms of the contract are unchanged, including compensation.

Additional agenda items related to UNL include the approval of the process for transferring the title for the Nebraska State Fairgrounds to the regents; and approval of a new policy for naming academic organizational units (colleges, programs, departments, centers, institutes and schools).
