Obituary – Daniel T. Walters

Walters was born March 24, 1951 in Chicago, Ill. He attended St. Juliana grade school, Loyola Academy, and the University of Illinois in Champaign. After serving with his wife, Janet Lynn Walters, as Peace Corps volunteers, teaching in El Zamorano, Honduras, he continued his exploration of science with a doctorate in soil science from the University of Minnesota at St. Paul.
Walters joined the faculty in the Department of Agronomy UNL in 1984 and until recently worked as a professor, researcher, mentor and teacher. His research focused on enhancing basic understanding of nutrient transformations and cycling in soils, and on using this knowledge to improve nutrient management of major field crops.
In his free time, Walters resurrected a 1972 Saab 95 and built clocks.
Walters is survived by his wife, Janet, and children, Lynn, John and Benjamin; mother Eleanor May Walters; siblings and their spouses, Chris Martin and John Walker, Janet and Mike Romito, John and Jennifer Walters, Mary Ellen and Lou Posedel, Tom and Carrie Walters, and Mike and Sue Walters; and nieces and nephews, Anna, Lee, Matt, Katy, Mike, Matt, Stephanie, Anna, Jenny, James, Cate, Noah, Ellie, and Tommy.
Services were Aug. 20 at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the University of Nebraska Foundation, Dan Walters Memorial Fund, the American Cancer Society, the League of Human Dignity, or support for other important work to better the human condition.
