Statistics expands

The new Department of Statistics was formed in 2003 from the statistics division of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Biometry in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Statistics formerly was a specialization in mathematics. Now it's a department that can grant master's and doctoral degrees and a minor for undergraduates.

Statistics department director Walter Stroup said the new degrees and minor open many career doors for students. Biotechnology and bioinformatics are two of the hottest career fields, Stroup said. Other fields include pharmaceutical and biomedical research, U.S. Census work, quality control, marketing, survey sampling, opinion polling, credit-risk analysis, and any form of scientific research.
